The Growing Mountain Of Clothes

.

Our house is splitting at the seams and the main culprit seems to be clothes. Children's clothes to be precise.

We have boxes and boxes, in wardrobes, under beds and in the loft. All carefully divided into seasons and age ranges. Some will be worn again, many won't. What suited Snaffles doesn't necessarily suit Munchie, the sizes and seasons didn't fall the same.

Getting rid of them is not as easy as it may seem. I've tried local ads, ebay and today I tried an NCT nearly new sale. People just don't seem to want them and if they do, they expect you to virtually give them away.

I am not willing to let brand new, hardly worn expensive items go for 99p. I would rather donate them.

There is only so much I can use the clothing for. I've had a teddy bear made from Snaffles clothes and I made a blanket for him. I will do the same for Munchie but this still hardly puts a dent in the mountain of clothes.

This leads me to my next questions;

1. What do you do with your children's clothes?

2. Do you know of anywhere I can donate the clothes for third world countries? I don't want to donate to the local charity shop for it to be sold for pence when people are in need of clothing.

I take all our outgrown clothes to the charity shop, a lot of them were already second hand to us anyway. I tried to sell a few of the more designer ones on eBay, but they didn't go for much and then people didn't pay, so I gave up. I did ask around friends and relatives first but couldn't find anyone that wanted them, everyone already had a second hand source!

I'm registered for Gift Aid, so they write to me occasionally to tell me how much my things have sold for. So far it has come to quite a lot (more than I would have donated to the charity in cash), so that's nice to know.

I have been thinking about this too, especially after a hard time with ebay, like you say selling for nothing to ungrateful people.

When mum died we gave things to the red cross, as they tagged the things and you did gift aid with them.

Otherwise I give them to people. I have been thinking lately of holding a swopping party with people with older children or just a jumble sale!

Next, Boden, Monsoon, Joules or any designers (mother in law buys designer stuff for the children occasionally) goes on ebay as it sells well, everything else goes to the charity shop. I don't care how much they sell it for though, once it's gone from my house it's gone in my view! If you have any coats though, there is a current collection going on for a UK charity to make sure every poverty stricken UK child has a coat this winter, and we can accept them at our office for this up until December 2nd.

I always just pass them on to friends with younger children

I have found that the best way now for me to get rid of our ever growing mountain was to give them to someone who sells on ebay for a living. The reason is they have huge feedback and lots of items selling on at anyone time getting more viewers. Even splitting the profits 40/60 I find i get more money than doing it on my own. I also get it out of the house and dont have to send it RESULT!!!
For other items that are not worth selling i take them to one of the childrens charity shops or there is a great second had kids store near me who buy them from you and then sell them for a profit!

'Down Under' we have an Anti Violence Charity that collects children's and women's clothing to be used at battered women's shelters. Places were abused women can turn to, with their children, for help, support and most of all safety. They are always in need of children's clothing, whether designer or not. So no money made on the clothing for the charity as they give them to chidren, but maybe a life put back to some form of normality instead.
